Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Paperly (“Paperly,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information when you use the Paperly mobile application on iOS or Android (the “App”). Paperly is an independently developed exam-paper maker for teachers. It is not affiliated with CBSE, NCERT, or any school board.
By using the App, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
1. Summary
- You do not need to create an account to use the App.
- Drafts, saved papers, and your school/class/subject defaults are stored on your device.
- Creating, generating, or exporting a paper sends paper content to our servers so we can assemble questions, render PDF/Word files, and operate the App.
- We collect generated question papers (including questions, answers, headers, and related metadata) to train and improve Paperly and to grow our question library.
- Ask AI and Scan send prompts or cropped photos to Google Gemini. Figure uploads are stored with Cloudflare R2. The shared question library is hosted on Supabase.
- We use Microsoft Clarity to understand how the App is used. Usage analytics are shared with Microsoft so we can improve App UX.
- The App does not show ads and does not process payments.
2. Information we process
2.1 Information stored on your device
The App stores the following locally on your device (for example, in the App’s documents folder):
- Teacher profile and defaults — school name, preferred class, preferred subject, and whether onboarding is complete.
- Saved papers — exam papers you create or edit, including questions, answers, chapters, paper patterns, and references to attached figures.
- Exam patterns — paper layouts you configure (marks, duration, section mix).
Uninstalling the App typically deletes this local data, subject to how your operating system manages app storage. Deleting a paper in the App removes it from your device. It does not necessarily remove copies we already collected for library or training purposes (see section 2.3).
2.2 Information sent to operate the App
Paperly uses a cloud backend (currently hosted on Google Cloud). Depending on the feature, we may receive:
- Catalog and library requests — class, subject, chapter, question type, and search text when you browse the question library or load the syllabus catalog.
- Paper generation — school name, class, subject, exam type, year, and selected chapters when you generate a paper from the library.
- PDF and Word export — the full paper JSON, including school header, questions, answers, figures, and layout, so we can render a print-ready file.
- Ask AI — your prompt plus class, subject, chapter/topic, and question type.
- Scan — a cropped photo of a question (sent as image data) plus class, subject, chapter/topic, and question type.
- Figure uploads — diagrams or photos you attach to a question, uploaded to object storage.
Please do not put student names, roll numbers, marks, or other personal data of children into papers, prompts, or scanned photos.
2.3 Generated papers, training, and the question library
We collect question papers that are generated through the App — including papers assembled from our library and papers you create, edit, and export — for training and improving Paperly and for building and maintaining our question library.
This may include:
- Questions, options, passages, sub-questions, and answer keys
- School name and other header details printed on the paper
- Class, subject, exam type, chapters, marks, and related metadata
- Attached figures or diagrams
- Questions you type, paste, scan, generate with Ask AI, or pick from the library, once they form part of a generated or exported paper
The shared library is made from various sources, including content teachers add through the App. Collected papers and questions may be stored, reviewed, de-duplicated, edited, and shown to other teachers as library items. We may also use this content to improve generation quality, product features, and related models.
We do not currently offer a per-paper “opt out” of this collection. If you do not want a paper used this way, do not generate or export it with Paperly. Copyright owners can request removal as described in section 12.
2.4 Ask AI, Scan, and on-device OCR
Ask AI sends your prompt and paper context to Google Gemini to draft one question. Scan sends a cropped photo of a printed question to our servers and to Google Gemini so it can be transcribed.
The App may also run on-device text recognition (Apple Vision on iOS; Google ML Kit on Android) to help read a scanned crop. On-device OCR stays on your device. The cropped image is still sent to our backend and to Gemini for transcription.
Google processes this content under its own terms. Do not scan photos that contain personal information you do not want processed, or content you do not have the right to submit.
2.5 Photos, camera, and figures
If you allow it, the App uses the camera and photo library so you can photograph a question or attach a diagram. Images you attach as figures are uploaded to Cloudflare R2 and stored at a URL the paper can reference. Those URLs may be technically reachable by anyone who has the link.
We do not access your full camera roll. We only receive the photo or crop you choose.
2.6 Analytics and usage information (Microsoft Clarity)
We use Microsoft Clarity to collect analytics about how the App is used, so we can improve App UX. User analytics data is shared with Microsoft for this purpose. This may include:
- Screen names and navigation within the App
- Custom usage events (for example, creating a paper, opening the library, Ask AI, Scan, export, or settings)
- Session analytics and session replay / screen recordings of App usage
- Device and technical information collected by Clarity as part of its service
Screens that show school names, questions, or answers may be visible in session replays. Clarity is operated by Microsoft. Their processing is also governed by Microsoft’s privacy terms and Clarity documentation.

2.7 Information you provide when contacting us
If you use “Report a Bug,” “Contact Support,” or email us, you may send your email address, message content, and optional diagnostic details that the App can prefill (for example, App version, platform, operating system version, device model, and locale). We use this information to respond to and resolve your request.
2.8 Sharing and printing
If you share a PDF, Word file, or answer key, the App opens your device’s system share sheet. You choose the destination. Once shared, that destination’s privacy practices apply. Printing uses your device’s print features. Paperly does not upload shared files to a separate “share server” beyond the export rendering described above.
2.9 Store platforms
Apple App Store and Google Play may collect information related to downloads, updates, crash reports, and optional in-app review prompts according to their own policies. That processing is controlled by Apple or Google, not by Paperly.
3. Information we do not collect
As of the last updated date of this policy, Paperly does not:
- Require user accounts, sign-in, or profiles tied to an email login
- Sell your personal information
- Show third-party advertising in the App
- Process payments or subscriptions inside the App
- Request access to contacts, microphone, or precise location
- Send push notifications
4. How we use information
We use information as follows:
- To provide core App features (catalog, library, generation, editing, Ask AI, Scan, figures, PDF/Word export)
- To collect generated papers for training, product improvement, and the shared question library
- To understand App usage and improve UX using Microsoft Clarity
- To respond to support, bug reports, and copyright notices
- To secure, debug, and operate our servers and storage
- To comply with applicable law when required
5. Legal bases (where applicable)
If you are in a region that requires a legal basis for processing (such as the EEA/UK), we generally rely on: (a) performance of the service you request; (b) our legitimate interests in operating Paperly, understanding App usage, improving the product, and maintaining a question library, balanced against your rights; and/or (c) your consent where required (for example, when you email us, grant camera/photo permission, or share content). In India, we process personal information as reasonably necessary to provide the App and for the purposes described here, in line with applicable law including the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 where it applies.
6. Sharing of information
We may share information in these cases:
- Microsoft Clarity — usage analytics and session insights, to improve App UX
- Google (Gemini and Cloud) — Ask AI prompts, Scan images, and hosting of the Paperly backend
- Cloudflare R2 — storage of uploaded figures
- Supabase — hosting of the question library and related catalog data
- Other teachers using Paperly — questions and related content that become part of the shared library (typically without identifying you as the contributor)
- At your direction — when you share a file, print, or contact support
- Legal requirements — if required by law, regulation, or valid legal process
- Business transfer — if the App is transferred as part of a sale, merger, or similar event, information related to the App may transfer with it
We do not sell personal information.
7. Data retention
- On-device data — retained until you delete papers in the App, clear App data, or uninstall the App
- Generated papers and library content — retained as long as reasonably needed to operate, train, and improve Paperly and the question library, unless we remove an item (including after a valid copyright request)
- Uploaded figures — retained while needed for papers, the library, or backups
- Ask AI / Scan processing — processed to return a result; Google may retain data according to its own policies. We may retain derived question text as described in section 2.3
- Support emails — retained as long as reasonably needed to handle your request and maintain basic records
- Analytics — retained according to Microsoft Clarity’s retention settings and policies
8. Security
We take reasonable steps appropriate for an independently developed app, including restricting backend library access with an API key and storing library data in a database that is not openly writable from the App. No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. Uploaded figures stored at public object URLs should not include sensitive personal information.
9. Children’s privacy
The App is intended for teachers and other educators. It is a general-audience tool and is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Do not enter personal information about students into the App. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us (for example, via email or a scanned photo), contact us and we will take reasonable steps to delete it.
10. International users
The App may be used in different countries. Our servers and providers (including Google, Microsoft, Cloudflare, and Supabase) may process data in the United States, India, or other locations. By using the App, you understand that your information may be processed in countries that may have different data protection laws than your own.
11. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict certain processing of personal information. For Paperly specifically:
- You can edit school name, class, and subject in Settings
- You can edit or delete papers stored on your device
- You can deny camera or photo-library permission in system settings (Scan and figure attach will not work)
- You can choose not to share files or contact support
- You can email us to ask questions about privacy or request deletion of personal information you sent us by email
We may not be able to delete questions or papers already incorporated into the shared library or used for training, except where required by law or where a valid copyright notice applies (section 12). We cannot delete analytics already processed by Microsoft Clarity beyond what their tools and policies allow, and we cannot control data held by Apple, Google, Cloudflare, Supabase, or apps you share with.
12. Copyright and content removal
If you believe content in Paperly (including the question library) infringes your copyright, email shashwatdubey111@gmail.com with appropriate documents so we can review the request. Please include:
- Your name and contact email
- A description of the copyrighted work
- The specific question, paper, or figure you want removed, with enough detail for us to find it
- Proof of ownership or authority to act (for example, registration, publication details, or other supporting documents)
- A statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorised by the owner, its agent, or the law
We may remove or restrict content where we reasonably believe a notice is valid. Incomplete requests may delay review.
13. Third-party links and services
The App may open external links (such as this Privacy Policy) or hand off files to other apps via the system share sheet. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third parties.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Continued use of the App after an update means you accept the revised policy. Material changes may also be noted in an App update description when practical.
